The Banqueting Hall

Washington, D.C.

My semester-long design project during my 4th year is located in Washington, D.C. Our site was located along the canal on the Potomac River and each member of my studio chose a different public building that we thought the area needed. As my classmates chose university buildings, a post office, theaters, market halls, libraries and more, I decided that what the area lacked was a place for celebration and merriment. Therefore, I chose to design a Banqueting Hall along the canal, facing the southwest setting sun to be used for wedding receptions, conventions, public functions and more. It is a flexible space with enough outdoor area to serve the building's needs in nice weather as well. The ground floor contains the main banquet hall room while upstairs has more flexible space for club meetings, conferences, and private dinners.

I created an urban design for the surrounding area around the Banquet Hall.

The last sheet on this page is a preliminary analysis I did in which I studied the size and geometry of the main streets of Rome compared to the main street in Washington, D.C.: Constitution Avenue.
